"Out Of Darkness - S/T-1970 UK":

This is a wonderful but little-known gem from 1970. A Christian Heavy/ Psych group 'OUT OF DARKNESS' made a cutting psych LP here. The lyrics delivered with conviction, great biting progressive guitar with 'rough edge' attack. Superb Hendrix Inspired Psychedelic Rock LP. Their rare only album, have some religious overtones, as it appeared on the religious 'Key' record label in England, but as a group, it's pretty amazing. The London-based outfit were very competent musicians and the material on this album ranges from Heavy/Psych through to Jazz/Blues. This is one of the most sought after British Progressive albums!!!

Members: Carl Grant (bass, bongos) Ray Powell ( lead and acoustic guitars) Tony Goodman (vocals, harmonica, acoustic guitars) Tim Anderson (drums)

"Thee Sixpence -Step By Step-1966-1967 US":

Thee Sixpence are most noted by collectors as the group that, with some lineup changes, evolved into Strawberry Alarm Clock. Before that, they issued some singles in 1966-1967 on the tiny All-American label. These were above-average, though not outstanding songs in the typical raw, foreboding Los Angeles garage-verging-on-psychedelia mode, sounding close in respects to better-produced efforts during the same era by the Chocolate Watch Band, the Seeds and the Standells.

Step By Step captures the entire collection of recordings by Thee Sixpence, including the original version of "Incense and Peppermints" (pre-Strawberry Alarm Clock).

"Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun- 1974 Canada":

Terry Jacks (born March 29, 1944 in Winnipeg) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and environmentalist.Growing up as part of the hippie generation a teenage Terry Jacks migrated to the west coast where, as a guitarist and singer, he joined a Vancouver, British Columbia band called "The Chessmen." The group had a few minor local hits before disbanding after which Jacks teamed up with soloist, Susan Pesklevits. Jacks composed, arranged and produced their material while Pesklevits sang lead vocals. For a time the duo performed at small clubs in Vancouver before adding another guitarist and drummer and restyling themselves as the "The Poppy Family."

When "The Poppy Family" split up, working on his own, Terry helped on a Beach Boys album that initially included the recording of an English language version of the 1961 Jacques Brel song, Seasons In The Sun. When the group chose not to go with it on their album, Jacks decided to do it himself but first set about to rewrite the final verse and to rearrange parts of the chorus. Released as a single in 1973 on his own record label, the song became the largest-selling single in Canadian history and earned Jacks three Juno Awards. In the United States, the song went to No.1 on the charts.

In 1974 he released Seasons In The Sun album, recorded at Can-Base Studios, Vancouver, B.C and the music is in the folk /pop mood.

"Aorta-S/T-1969 US":

During the mid-'60s, the members of Aorta, originally hailing from Rockford, IL, had previously been in a group called the Exceptions. Early members of this group included Kal David (later of Illinois Speed Press and H.P. Lovecraft), Marty Grebb (the Buckinghams), and Peter Cetera (Chicago). With the exception of bassist Peter Cetera, already had an eye toward expanding their original material to include a more "psychedelic" sound, they soon reconfigured themselves as Aorta, and, in late 1968, recorded a single for Atlantic. Eventually, producer Bill Traut (American Breed) approached them on behalf of Dunwich Productions, Inc., and with Bobby Jones taking over on bass after Cetera's departure they accepted his offer to record their debut album for Columbia in 1969.
This is the debut album by a relatively obscure Chicago-based group whose membership can be linked to various other Chicago area groups. Aorta probably shouldn't be viewed as a "psychedelic" album. Instead, a more accurate description would emphasize the group's jazzier art rock side, not to mention their abundant use of dramatic pseudo-soul vocals and histrionic guitar/organ arrangements. Despite using numerous sound library effects (crying babies, ringing telephones, etc.) Aorta sound more like a few other keyboard-heavy rock acts of their day, especially Vanilla Fudge, Three Dog Night and Argent.

"Terry Callier -The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier- 1965 US":

Terry Callier's first album sneaked out to little fanfare in the mid '60s, he was still Chicago's best-kept secret. It would be some time before he had an opportunity to fully exploit his soul and jazz influences. Callier's youthful voice, backed sympathetically here by his acoustic guitar plus two basses, was a strikingly androgynous instrument sounding like a smooth, steady Nina Simone minus the simmering anger. Great songs like "It's About Time" and "Spin Spin Spin", maybe you know from the 1968 album by the psychedelic band HP Lovecraft.
Recorded at Webb Studios, Chicago, Illinois on July 29, 1964.
Members: Terry callier (vocals, acoustic guitar) Terbour Attenborough, John Tweedle (bass)

"Ambergris -S/T-1970 US":

A genre-busting batch of tunes from Ambergris, a group with styles that range from Memphis soul, to New York Latin, to some of the heavier sides of the underground rock scene of the time! The ensemble features Latin Soul maestro Larry Harlow on piano, organ and percussion, working with a rock-based group that still has lots of jazzy touches on their instrumentation. Steve Cropper produced the set and the whole thing explodes with a rich range of musical influences, all bubbling together in one pot! Includes the funky rock tracks "Soul Food" and "Forget It I Got It". (vinyl rip)

"Sweet Smoke -Live-1974 US,Germany":

Sweet Smoke was created in 1967 at Brooklyn New York where all members lived. They incorporated many different influences such as jazz, funk and island rhythms. The original members were Andrew Dershin, Mike Paris, Victor Sacco, Jay Dorfman and Marvin Kaminovitz. The complete name of the band was : "Sweet Smoke of the Happy Plant Pipefull".

Originally from N.Y. the group moved to Germany where they lived as a family commune. Sweet Smoke living and playing in Europe from 1970 till 1974. The Sweet Smoke Live is the third release from the progressive jazz rock band, sounds like a studio record with lots of rythm and melodic changes, very well chained. It was recorded live in Berlin, Musikhochschule.

Rick Greenberg: Rhythm guitar, Sitar
Marvin Kaminowitz: Lead guitar, vocals, percussion
John Classi: Percussion, sound effects

"Tharsin Hri (Θαρσείν Χρει)-S/T-1974 Greece":

Tharsin Hri were created in Athens in 1973 by Giorgos "Orfeus" Bilikas, Babis Maragos and Kostas Halvadakis. Later, was added in the drums Tolis Piperas. In the spring of 1974 Dimitris Dimitrakas (later in Panx Romana) replaced in the drums Tolis Piperas.
Back in 1973, this band were featured in the legendary and very collectable compilation "Pop Festival '73", released by Columbia. By the end of 1973, the group entered the studio and recorded an album-worth material, for the label. It never materialized and first official release without any additions or corrections came in 2004 from Anazitisi Records. It contains 10 self-penned tracks that you could classify in the electric folk-rock genre. At the same time hard-rock tinges and soft -psychedelic elements are hidden within great melodies.
The dissolution of the band , came the summertime of 1974 with the makes of Cyprus and the mobilisation (obligatorily) and with the change of regime (substantially), that found Greece out of the political songs.

"Billy Nicholls-Would You Believe -1968 UK":

Billy Nicholls (born 15 February 1949, White City district of Shepherd's Bush, London) is an English singer, songwriter, producer and musical director, who first gained fame in the 1960's while still a teenager with his Pet Sounds influenced album, Would You Believe, originally released on Immediate Records.
Billy Nicholls was originally hired by Andrew Loog Oldham as a staff writer for Oldham's Immediate Records. Oldham was so entranced by the Beach Boys , Pet Sounds album that he enlisted songwriter Billy Nicholls to record a British response, which became this largely forgotten album. The Faces , Steve Marriott can be heard very prominently on "Would you believe", despite Oldham's attempts to drown them out with heavy orchestration. Oldham wanted this to be the British Pet Sounds but financial difficulties with the label caused it to be shelved (it only achieved an initial promotional run of 100 copies) before it ever hit the streets.

"Pop Festival 1973 - Greece":

Another lost compilation of 70's Pop/Rock groups from Greece. Very collectable, all lyrics are in Greek and presents the 70's Greek rock scene in all its glory. Enjoy!!!

"The Chambers Brothers -The Time Has Come -1967 US":

The group was formed in 1954 in Los Angeles, California by four brothers from Mississippi, George, Willie, Lester and Joe Chambers. They toured extensively throughout southern California, but did not achieve nationwide success until 1965 when, with the addition of drummer Brian Keenan, they appeared at the Newport Folk Festival. Shortly after this they recorded their debut album People Get Ready. The band scored their first major hit in 1968 with "Time Has Come Today" (written by Joe & Willie Chambers), from their similarly named third album The Time Has Come.Used great effect on many of their songs, frequently propelling the music into a funk groove, or as on 'The Time Has Come', acting as a timepiece that morphs into a psychedelic metronome.

"The Rugbys - Hot Cargo - 1969 US":

The Rugbys is a rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. They are best known for their U.S. Top 40 hit "You, I".The band was formed in 1965 in Louisville, doing mostly covers. But as competition among Louisville groups to write and record original music increased, The Rugbys released two singles in 1968, "Walking the Streets Tonight" which was written by Doug Sahm of the Sir Douglas Quintet, and "Stay with Me" witten by Steve McNicol. Both songs were released locally, and played on Louisville radio stations.

But it was not until the band decided to release the B-side of "Stay with Me", "You, I", also written by McNicol (which then went to #1 on local stations), that they were signed to Shelby Singleton's Nashville, Tennessee record label, Amazon Records. Amazon re-released the single "You, I" in 1969, and the song became a national hit, climbing to # 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and # 21 in the Cashbox chart. The latter part of 1969 and all of 1970 were spent touring the mid-west and north east, playing on the same bill with artists like Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railroad, the James Gang and many others. Later that year, the band released their only album, Hot Cargo.

"The Music Machine-(Turn On) The Music Machine-1966 US":

The Music Machine's first album, (Turn On) The Music Machine which was released in 1966 to back up their hit single "Talk Talk" with its snarling vocal and fuzz-drenched guitar. And the lyrics dark and sinister images were reflected in the band's appearance, dressed in black from head to toe, complete with black guitars and a single black leather glove. Great garage album!!!

"The Bonniwell Music Machine-S/T- 1967 US":

The Music Machine (1965-1969) was an American garage rock and psychedelic band headed by singer-songwriter Sean Bonniwell and based in Los Angeles. The band sound was often defined by fuzzy guitars and a Farfisa organ. Their original look comprised of all-black clothing and black moptop hairstyles .
After a promotional tour of the U.S. the rest of the original line-up, which included Ron Edgar (drums), Mark Landon (guitar), Keith Olsen (bass) and Doug Rhodes (organ), left Bonniwell, due to internal conflicts. In 1967 , Music Machine (essentially only Bonniwell at this point) were signed to Warner Bros and re-named The Bonniwell Music Machine.
The name was changed to give more prominence to the band's core member, songwriter and vocalist Sean Bonniwell. A self-titled LP was released that year, made up mostly of previously recorded singles with the original line-up. Highly Recommended!!!

"The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Vol 2 -1967 US":

Recorded and released in 1967, "Volume Two" was a more ambitious and coherent album, with all of the tracks credited either in whole or in part to members of the band. It featured Markley’s anti-war rant "Suppose They Give A War And No One Comes" partly based on a speech by Franklin D. Roosevelt and the song "Smell of Incense", featuring Morgan’s guitar work and later covered by Southwest F.O.B. The album also started to demonstrate Markley’s lyrical obsession with young girls.

"The James Gang - Yer' Album -1969 US":

The Gang's roots stretch back to 1966 in Cleveland, OH, where drummer Jim Fox formed the group with a few fellow Kent State University students, guitarist Glenn Schwartz and bassist Tom Kriss. But when Schwartz left to join Pacific Gas Electric, Fox and Kriss opted to carry on with new singer/guitarist Joe Walsh. Yer' Album is the first album by the James Gang, released in 1969. The group had written some material, but they were still something of a cover band and this is the only album featuring the bassist Tom Kriss. An exciting, hard-rocking white blues record. It includes a terrific versions of Howard Tate's "Stop", Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" and the Yardbirds' "Lost Woman".

"The Harvey Averne Barrio Band-S/T-1971 US":

An excellent album by Latin Soul arranger Harvey Averne! A heavy set of 70s grooves that has a lot of Chicano rock influences and which mixes together percussion, electric guitar, soulful vocals, and plenty of other tasty instrumental touches. Arrangements are by Marty Sheller, the album got a stone NuYorican groove with tracks that include "Para Ti","Cayuco", "Heavy Duty", "In the Wind", "Girl From The Mountain" and "Cucaraca Macara". A Solid Funk and Latin Soul/Chicano Rock masterpiece!!!

" Les Baxter -Wild In The Streets -1968 OST":

The totally groovy, pop soundtrack from the cult counter-culture movie from 1968 - Wild in the Streets! Taking the 60s catchphrase "Never trust anyone over 30" to its most extreme conclusion, Wild in the Streets tells the story of Max Frost, a 22-year old rock star millionaire who joins causes with a politician to get the vote for 14-year olds. Frost eventually becomes President and uses his powers to issue his first presidential edict with his youth-controlled police state agenda, anyone over 30 is required to live in "retirement homes" which actually resemble concentration camps....
Written by Les Baxter, with songs by successful songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and arranged by Mike Curb, the Wild in the Streets soundtrack is a terrific collection of late 60s psychedelic pop songs that will have you stone-cold groovin. A true cult classic, and the song, "Shapes Of Things To Come" was released as a single credited to Max Frost and the Troopers it charted at #22 in 1968!

Track listing:
Love to be your man -Free lovin' -Fifty two per cent -Shape of things to come- Psychedelic senate -Fourteen or fight -Wild in the streets- Listen to the music -Sally Le Roy -Shelly in camp

"Alexandro Jodorowsky /Shades of Joy-Music of El Topo -1970 OST":

El Topo (The Mole) is a Mexican allegorical, cult western movie and underground film, directed by and starring Alejandro Jodorowsky. The music (composed by Jodorowsky and the band Shades of Joy) is something between Miles Davis-styled early jazz-rock fusion, the kind of funky stuff you might expect to hear on some '70s blaxploitation soundtrack, San Francisco acid rock-styled guitar work, and pretty, pastoral neo-classical interludes, it never quite stays in a set groove. Keyboardist Howard Wales (a session player for numerous musical acts, including James Brown, Four Tops,A.B. Skhy,Grateful Dead) is the most recognizable of the 15 musicians credited and contributes some really good organ work. Highly recommended!!!

"The Appletree Theatre - Playback -1968 US":

Appletree Theatre was the group name of brothers John and Terry Boylan, starting in 1968.They made a very interesting album, which attracted cult attention, after which John became a producer of, among other people, the Eagles, and Terry became a solo artist under the name Terence Boylan.Playback is divided into three acts, an overture, and an epilogue, with the full-length songs linked by dialogue and snatches of music, sometimes given distorted sonic treatment. That's a style that became trendy during the Sgt. Pepper era, but really wasn't strictly necessary for a set such as this, which in the main consists of fairly conventional songs mixing folk-rock, pop/rock, light psychedelia and orchestrated sunshine pop. This is one of the finest examples of the early psychedelia.

"Eden's Children-S/T- 1968 US":

Excellent Boston Psych with some wild Fuzz guitar. Here is their first album by this power trio, influenced by Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Who with echoed vocals and some jazzy solos.

Members: Richard Schamach (guitar, vocals) Larry Kiley (bass) Jimmy Sturman (drums)

"The Wind In The Willows-S/T-1968 US":

This band of New York hippies is also known for the presence of a very young Deborah Harry on vocals, tamboura, tambourine & finger cymbals, years before she acheived fame in the new-wave group Blondie.Their sole album originally appeared in 1968. A dreamy collection of psychedelic folkpop that perfectly captures the innocence and whimsy of the 1960s flower-power dream. The Wind In The Willows have a sound that blends acoustic guitars, bits of strings, woodwinds, all together into a sweetly sunny blend that has the members of the group often singing with a bit of a harmony style. Recommended!!!

"Tomorrow's Gift -S/T-1970 Germany":

'Tomorrow's Gift' originally formed as a blues and soul-rock band evolving by the end of the ‘60s into progressive rock, but still remain faithful to their roots. The line up consisted of Ellen Meyer (Vocals) Carlo Karges (guitar, percussion), Manfred Rurup (organ), Wolfgang Trescher (flute), Bernd Kiefer (bass) and Olaf Casalich (drums).Casalich was later replaced by Gerd Paetzke.

In 1970 the young band (three members were still teenagers) set out to release their debut double album. As expected the production yielded a rough unpolished edge giving the album the typical vintage progressive sound. The album features an abundance of guitars, organ, flute and drum solos accompanied by Meyer’s vocals which have been likened to Janis Joplin. After their self titled effort the band had split in 1971.

"Alive 'N Kickin' -S/T-1970 US":

"Butch Engle & the Styx-No Matter What You Say- The Best of -1966-67 US":

Featuring the angst-ridden vocals of Butch Engle and scintillating original material from the pen of the Beau Brummels' Ron Elliott, Butch Engle & the Styx knocked 'em dead wherever they played on the SF Bay Area teen music circuit. Butch Engle & the Styx possessed the perfect sound for 1966-'67. "No Matter What You Say " rounds up all three singles and a garage-load of unreleased material from Golden State Recorders.

"Memphis Black -Soul Club -1969 Germany":

Heavy Hammond funk from the 60s German scene! Memphis Black was the pseudonym of Ingfried Hoffmann , one of the best organ players on the continent in the 60s, an artist known well through his soundtrack and sound library sessions, as well as his killer contributions to the Klaus Doldinger combo. As you might guess from the title, this set's got a definite Memphis soul groove, one that references the Stax sound of Booker T & The MGs, but which also takes off in a way that's got more of the mod and groovy touches of German and British albums from the time.

Includes the mighty funk track "Why Don't You Play The Organ Man" plus the cuts "Sister Aretha", "Whole Lotta Woman", "Soul Man", "Hey Joe", "Chain Of Fools", "Soul Finger"and more...

"Booker T. & the MG's-Doin' Our Thing -1968 US":

" The Spirit Of Atlanta-The Burning of Atlanta -1973 US":

This album is one of the greatest ever to come out of the 70s, a tight batch of funk tracks with a heck of a lot of guitar. The set was produced by Tommy Stewart and it's got an unusual style that's equally appealing to fans of funk. Tommy Stewart is an American trumpeter, arranger, producer, composer and pianist residing in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a member of several active performing groups including the Magic City Jazz Orchestra, Cleveland Eaton and the Alabama All-Stars, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame Jazz All-Stars and Ray Reach and Friends.
In 1969 he moved to Atlanta and taught in Fayetteville, he also worked for Morris Brown College doing band arrangements. In 1973 he did the charts for "The Burning of Atlanta" LP by The Spirit of Atlanta on Buddah Records, includes the great tracks "Vine City" and "Messin Around", both of which are very long funk tracks, plus shorter funky cuts like "Down Underground", "Freddie's Alive and Well" and "Buttermilk Bottom".
This funky monster classic recorded at Sound Pit Recording Studios, Atlanta, GA .

"Iota-1971 US":

The legendary El Paso, Texas Suemi label comes this previously unreleased psych masterpiece by IOTA. This 4 piece band tore up Texas before re-locating to Memphis to record for Hi Records in the late 60s. They released two great 45s, including the amazing 'Precincts' in 1971. Deemed too dark and disturbing for commercial radio, these two releases went nowhere and the band went their separate ways after two years of playing and recording. The best tracks with wailing guitars, swirling organ, strong vocals and a tight rhythm section (recorded in both Memphis and El Paso) made this one of the finest Texas psych rock albums. Enjoy!!!

by request: "Quicksilver Messenger Service - What About Me- 1971 US ":

'Quicksilver Messenger Service' was one of San Francisco original psychedelic bands of the late '60s . Essentially a jam band , their early albums and live shows contributed to some of the best instrumental jams of the period. They were popular around the Bay Area and achieved international recognition among devotees of psychedelic rock , but they did not reach the broader popularity enjoyed by their San Francisco contemporaries, Jefferson Airplane , Grateful Dead , and others.

'What About Me' is the fifth album by 'Quicksilver Messenger Service'. Released in 1971 and recorded partly at the same sessions that produced 'Just For Love'. The album is the last to feature pianist Nicky Hopkins and the last pre-reunion effort to feature founding members David Freiberg and John Cipollina.

by request: "Los Yorks -S/T-1967 Peru":

Rough-edged rock and roll from the Peruvian scene of the 60s, the set play some covers, at the time when the scene was still very much in love with the R&B-influenced style of the UK beat groups. Here is their first album. Los Yorks came out of the Rímac district of Lima, Peru.

"The Plastic Cloud - Plastic Cloud - 1968 Canada":

In 1968, the Canadians Plastic Cloud recorded quite simply, one of the greatest psychedelic albums ever made. This is one hip album, full of catchy melodies and hippie harmonies, as well as some of the most superb fuzz guitar. The guitar truly doesn't stop, blazing on behind and around the singing. The songwriting and vocals are all credited to group guitarist/leader Don Brewer.
Essential psychedelia!!!
